Prof. Qi-Kun Xue graduated with a major in optics from Shandong University in 1984. He received his Ph.D in condensed matter physics from Institute of Physics, The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1994. From 1994 to 2000, he worked as a research associate with Prof. Toshio Sakurai at Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Japan. From 1996 to 1997, he worked as a visiting assistant professor at Prof. D. E. Aspnes' group at North Carolina State University, USA. In 2000, he set up his own research group and became a professor at Institute of Physics, The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Beijing. He became a chair professor at Department of Physics, Tsinghua University in May 2005. He was elected into The Chinese Academy of Sciences in Dec. 2005. Prof. Xue is now on the Editorial Advisory Board of Surface Science, Nanotechnology, Journal of Physics D (Applied Physics), European Physical Journal (EPJ Applied Physics), Applied Physics (Journal of Applied Physics) and five Chinese journals. He is the Chief Editor of Nano Research (Tsinghua University Press and Springer).
The main research interests of Prof. Xue are in the following areas: (1) Low temperature scanning tunneling microcopy and spin-polarized scanning tunneling microcopy; (2) Atomic-scale study of growth/fabrication and quantum phenomenon of low-dimensional nano-structures (metal nanoclusters, ultra thin films and nanowires); (3) Topological insulators and Spin-polarized electron transport for quantum computation/information and spintronics; (4) Thin film growth and atomistic analysis of surface structure, epitaxial growth process and underlined device behavior of III-V arsenides and nitrides (GaAs and GaN etc.) by using molecular beam epitaxy-scanning tunneling microscopy (MBE-STM).
Prof. Xue has authored/coauthored more than 200 papers, which include 1 paper in Science, 1 paper in PNAS, 21 papers in Physical Review Letters and 5 comprehensive review papers (for example, Progress in Surface Science 56, P1-P132 (1997)), with citation of more than 3000 time (H factor 27). He has presented more than 50 invited talks at international meetings/conferences, such as the American Physical Society March Meeting (1996, 2005),The International Conference on Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy (1999, 2005, 2006), The Annual American Vacuum Society Meeting (2004), The Fall Meeting of American Material Research Society (2004), and at European Conference of Surface Science (2006) (plenary talk).
The rewards he has received include Ten Outstanding Young Scientists of CAS (2000), Prize for Advancement in Science and Technology of Beijing (first class, 2003), National Prize for Advancement in Natural Science (second class, 2004), Prize for Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement of CAS (2006).
