Research Interests

Our group focuses on the electronic structure and ultrafast dynamics of two-dimensional materials and heterostructures utilizing advanced electron spectroscopies, such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), Nanospot ARPES (NanoARPES), Spin-resolved ARPES (SpinARPES) and time-resolved ARPES (TrARPES). In particular, our research focues on the two aspects:

(1) Band structure engineering of two-dimensional materials by using intercalation, interfacial interactions etc using ARPES, Nano/MicroARPES, SpinARPES. We have made important progress in the band structure engineering of van der Waals heterostructures, for example, graphene/BN (Nature Physics 2016), quasi-crystalline twisted bilayer graphene (PNAS 2018), Kekule-ordered graphene (PRL 2021), flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (Nature Materials 2024) and field-tunable flat bands in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (Nature Communications 2024).

(2) Ultrafast dynamics and light-induced manipulation using TrARPES. We developed advanced ultrafast pump and probe light sources, which are used to capture the ultrafast dynamics of materials and to induce transient modifications to the band structure. For representative works, please see our recent work on Floquet band engineering upon near-resonance pumping (Nature 2023) and upon far below-gap pumping (PRL 2023), and the review/perspective article on Floquet engineering (Nature Review Materials 2022).
