报告摘要:Until recently, research on black holes could rightfully be said to be a theoretical enterprise. However, recent observations of gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers and also the observations of the Event Horizon Telescope have taken research on black holes into the realm of observational science. In this talk, I shall argue that quasi-local approaches (without recourse to global notions of event horizons) provide a unified framework for understanding mathematical, numerical, and observational aspects of black hole physics. I shall illustrate this with recent results from gravitational wave observations of black hole ringdown, and from numerical simulations of binary black hole mergers.
